Tour Overview

Experience the spectacular Punakha Tsechu (Festival), held in the grounds of the magnificent Punakha Dzong. A Tsechu is a Buddhist festival in honour of Guru Rimpoche, the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. Locals gather in a spirit of festivity, celebration and deep faith to witness unique masked dances and celebrations. The Tsechu is one of the best ways to experience the ancient living culture of Bhutan. Also visit sacred sites in Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and view the Black-Necked Cranes in the beautiful Phobjikha Valley.

Itinerary Details
  • Arrive at Paro International Airport with a traditional Bhutanese welcome.

  • Scenic drive to Thimphu along river valleys and forested hills.

  • Visit Tachog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, built by the legendary iron-bridge builder Thangtong Gyalpo.

  • Check in and relax.

  • Evening visit to Buddha Dordenma, offering panoramic views and sunset serenity.

  • Explore the bustling Thimphu main street and local cafés.

Overnight: Thimphu

  • Start with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, a center of daily spiritual activity.

  • Visit the Institute for Zorig Chusum (Arts & Crafts School) to witness students practicing Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts.

  • Explore the Folk Heritage Museum and understand rural Bhutanese living traditions.

  • Visit the Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s national animal.

  • End the day at Tashichho Dzong, beautifully illuminated at night.

Overnight: Phobjikha

  • Drive to Dochula Pass (3,100 m) with panoramic Himalayan views (weather permitting).

  • Walk around the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens.

  • Continue descending into the pristine Phobjikha Valley, a glacial basin known for its serenity and wide-open landscapes.

  • Visit the ancient Gangtey Monastery, one of the main Nyingma lineage centers.

  • Evening walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail—a peaceful introduction to the valley.

Overnight: Phobjikha

  • Visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre (cranes present Oct–Feb).

  • Explore traditional villages and meet local families living in beautifully preserved farmhouses.

  • Short hike to Khewa Lhakhang, a quiet countryside temple.

Overnight: Punakha

  • Scenic drive from Phobjikha through forests, valleys, and terraced fields.

  • Visit Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple), dedicated to the Divine Madman. Enjoy a gentle 20-minute village walk to reach the monastery.

  • Arrive in Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan.

  • Visit Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of the longest in Bhutan.

  • Relax at your hotel by the riverside.

Today is the highlight of your tour!

  • Spend the entire day experiencing the vibrant Punakha Tshechu, held in the courtyard of Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most stunning fortresses.

  • Enjoy sacred mask dances, cham performances, storytelling dances, and monastic rituals that depict Buddhist legends and moral teachings.

  • Witness the display of elaborate costumes, music from traditional instruments, and the gathering of locals in their finest attire.

  • Learn the spiritual significance of Tshechu traditions and receive blessings from monks.

Overnight: Paro

  • After breakfast, depart for Paro via scenic valleys and mountain passes.

  • Stop at Lamperi Royal Botanical Park (optional).

  • Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in the 7th century.

  • Explore Paro town and local handicraft shops.

  • Optional: Traditional hot stone bath at a farmhouse.

Overnight: Paro

  • Hike to the iconic Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)—a deeply spiritual site perched on a cliff.

  • Spend time exploring its temples, caves, and viewpoints.

  • Lunch at the mountain café overlooking Tiger’s Nest.

  • Evening free time for rest, shopping, or spa treatment.

  • Farewell dinner featuring traditional Bhutanese cuisine and cultural storytelling.
